Yamaha Rhino Recalled by Consumer Product Safety Commission

The Yamaha Rhino is a two passenger vehicle that looks a lot like a golf cart on steroids. It is generally described as a Recreational Utility Vehicle (RUV). However, it has also been described as a Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) and an ALL Terrain Vehicle (ATV). Model numbers for the off-highway recreational vehicle include the Rhino 450, 660, and 700.

Approximately 120,000.00 Yamaha Rhino's have been sold nationwide since early 2003. The vehicle has become very popular in warm climate states like Florida. For example, right outside of Tampa, there are plenty of locations where Yamaha Rhinos can be seen. Whether in Florida or elsewhere, its popularity might very well be attributed to its sturdy golf cart like looks giving it a perception of safety. Unfortunately, it appears that the perception of safety is misguided. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has investigated more than 50 incidents involving 46 driver and passenger related deaths involving the Rhino. The CPSC has concluded that the vehicle appears to be susceptible to roll over even at low speeds. Yamaha Rhino Injury Lawyers have filed suit against Yamaha Corporation as a result of injury and wrongful death caused by the roll overs.

On March 31, 2009 the CPSC announced a free repair program for the Yamaha Rhino models 450, 600, and 700 to address the rollover safety defects. In addition, Yamaha has agreed to stop selling the vehicle until the repair is incorporated into the vehicle design. The public should stop using these vehicles immediately, bring the vehicle back to the dealer, and have the vehicle repaired.
